RECORD-BREAKING POWERLIFTING PRODIGY Arram Eghoyan has won the coveted title of British Champion, emerging victorious from the British Powerlifting Championships, held at Bath University last weekend.
Spurred on by family, friends and local supporters, the 24 year-old Chingford-based athlete made a sensational debut in the senior competition to secure a clean sweep in the Squat, Deadlift and Bench Press categories.
Heaving a combined weight total of 647.5kg, Arram is British Champion in the 82.5kg weight category in each one of the three disciplines, shifting a massive 235 kg Squat, 177.5 kg Bench Press and a 235kg Dead Lift.
“I’m exhausted, but elated.” beamed Eghoyan, who has put himself through a strict diet and gruelling training regime in preparation for the competition. “I knew I was in pretty good shape, but ultimately, it’s down to how everything crystallises on the day. Thankfully, all the hard work has paid off.
Eghoyan, who fits training around his full time job as a personal trainer and sports massage therapist, has literally gone from strength to strength. While representing Great Britain in the WPF World Powerlifting Championships in Mexico last November he snatched the World Bench Press record and won the World Bench Press Championships. Competing in the Junior (under 23) 82.5kg class, he won Gold Medal in both the Powerlifting and the Bench Press.
Arram's other achievements in Powerlifting include 2005 UK Open Champion (BPC) and 2007 UK Open Champion (BPO).
Eghoyan’s meteoric progress has been keenly observed by David Carter, Head of the British Powerlifting Organisation (BPO).
“Arram’s performance in the British Championships was excellent and he’s got the potential to go further”, said Carter, “He’s still a young man and is not yet at his peak strength. I look forward to seeing him perform in the open world championships.”
“Anyone can train to be fitter and stronger”, added Carter, “but powerlifting isn’t just about lifting weights. To reach the ultimate levels in this sport, it’s essential for an athlete to practise perfect technique and application.”
It seems the sky’s the limit for the Arram, who graduated in sports studies at Southhampton University in 2006. He has secured sponsorship from Muscle Limits gym in Enfield in addition to sports supplement company XL Labs and his thirst for challenge is seemingly unquenchable. Eghoyan has now set his sights on Gold medals in the European and World Championships.
“With a world record and various British titles to defend, plus a few years of competition left, I’ve got my work cut out. I’m eager to find out how far I can push myself.”
